The Agony in the Garden
In Gethsemane, Jesus enters the full weight of the Passion that lies before Him. His human will recoils from suffering, yet He surrenders completely to the Father. The disciples sleep while Christ watches and prays. Victory begins when fear is brought honestly before God and obedience remains firm.
Ave Cordis Reflection
Jesus does not deny anguish; He consecrates it through obedience.
Prayer is the battlefield where the will is brought into order.
The sleeping disciples warn against spiritual complacency.
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Ten Points for the Decade
Hold one thought with each Hail Mary.
- Jesus enters Gethsemane knowing betrayal is near.
- He takes Peter, James, and John deeper into the garden.
- His soul is sorrowful even to death.
- He falls before the Father in prayer.
- He asks that the cup pass if possible.
- He chooses the Father’s will above His natural desire to escape suffering.
- The disciples fail to keep watch.
- Jesus returns to prayer rather than to resentment.
- The betrayer approaches while Christ stands ready.
- Ask for the strength to say yes to God when obedience is costly.
